Waldhaus private brewery

consistently focuses on sustainability

The view of the Swiss Alps, wide meadows and fields characterize the home of the Waldhaus private brewery. Here the southern Black Forest shows itself at its most beautiful. Despite all the idyllic scenery, the global challenges can also be felt in the tranquil Black Forest.

"As true Black Forest residents, we are committed to our homeland and therefore to our water, our forest and our cultural heritage," says Dieter Schmid, who is the fourth generation to run the company. "We not only use exclusively natural ingredients for our beer, but also green electricity."

It was only in May 2020 that the brewery's sustainability competence was confirmed again by the German Institute for Sustainability & Economics. The Münster-based institute attests that the family business operates in a highly sustainable manner, even after its initial certification in 2017.

In addition to the installation of a photovoltaic system with around 460 kilowatts peak, the modernization and optimization of the filling plant and steam generation as well as the local heat connection are among the sustainable innovations. Technical director Martin Gruner says: “With our photovoltaic system, we generate around 75 percent of the current electricity requirement. The rest is 100 percent green electricity. In this way, we save harmful carbon dioxide and help to preserve the unique nature of the Black Forest - which is essential for our beers.

At the same time, we are reducing resource consumption in many areas of production - even though we are growing! Many investments are therefore not only sustainable, but also make a lot of sense from a cost perspective."

But less spectacular projects, such as the provision of electric charging stations for visitors to the brewery inn, the replacement of the entire truck fleet with vehicles with lower emissions, company vehicles with hybrid technology or the fundamental conversion of staff and office space, are also part of the brewery's sustainability concept.

"At Waldhaus, we always act according to a balanced triad of ecological, economic and social sustainability. This means that we ensure a form of production that is acceptable in terms of climate policy, which is the basis for income and prosperity through efficiency and effectiveness and thus enables all employees and customers to enjoy long-term positive benefits. As a family business, you also want to pass your business on to the next generation successfully and healthily - these days, that is only possible if you keep an eye on not only your balance sheets, but above all the ecological balance," says brewery boss Dieter Schmid with conviction.

Waldhaus private brewery receives Federal Honorary Award from Cem Özdemir

Highest honour in the German brewing industry

The Waldhaus private brewery was awarded the Federal Honorary Prize by the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL) in a celebratory ceremony in Berlin. "For us brewers, this is like a knighthood," says Dieter Schmid, Managing Director of the Waldhaus private brewery. Only 12 of the 1,492 German breweries have been ennobled. "A great success for Waldhaus and of course also for our customers. Further proof that the beer specialties from Waldhaus are among the top class in Germany," says Schmid, delighted with the Federal Honorary Prize, which was awarded to the private brewery for the fifth time this year. "The Federal Honorary Prize winners are exemplary in their ability to process natural raw materials into products of the highest quality using traditional brewing methods and the latest brewing technology. They stand for tradition, innovation and variety of flavors," said DLG President Hubertus Paetow, praising the private brewery's consistent, sustainable pursuit of quality. Federal Minister and Beer Ambassador Cem Özdemir, together with the DLG President, presented the rare certificate and medal to the beer brewers from Waldhaus. "This is the highest honor that a company in the brewing industry can receive for its quality performance. And that makes us incredibly proud," emphasizes Bernhard Vötter. "Guaranteeing first-class quality and exclusive taste in all our beer specialties has always been and will remain our goal. Because enjoyment and quality simply belong together at a Waldhaus."

This is the Federal Honorary Award for Breweries

With its strict testing criteria, laboratory analyses and an expert jury made up of sensory-trained testers, the DLG quality test for beer is one of the most scientifically demanding and objective quality tests in the brewing industry. 130 breweries with over 700 beers were tested by the DLG in 2023. Only the best twelve breweries are awarded the Federal Honorary Prize. The Federal Honorary Prize is the highest award in the German brewing industry.

The Waldhaus private brewery, founded in 1833, is one of the smallest breweries in Germany, with over 100,000 hl of beer output per year and 50 employees. The Waldhaus private brewery has shown with flying colors that even small regional suppliers can successfully assert themselves in a shrinking market through a consistent and fair company philosophy. Regional price leadership, international awards and continuous healthy growth are just three points that clearly underline this.
